The Standard Chair was designed in 1934 by French engineer, architect and designer Jean Prouvé, originally for the university in Nancy, France. It is one of the most recognisable chairs of the 20th century.

Its distinctive side profile comes from a simple engineering insight: a chair’s back legs carry most of the sitter’s weight. So Prouvé made the rear legs large, hollow forms of bent sheet steel, and kept the front legs slim steel tubes. Vitra produces it today, faithful to the original.

This version pairs a dark oak seat and back with a Japanese Red powder-coated frame, bold but refined. It works as a dining, visitor or meeting chair, or as a feature piece.

Condition
Ex-showroom, in excellent condition. Inspected and presents well. As a display piece it may show light signs of handling, but the frame is solid and the seat and back are in good condition. Oak is a natural material, so variations in grain and colour are part of its character, not defects.

Ideal for
Dining rooms, meeting rooms, studios, cafés and as a statement visitor chair.
