The Eames Moulded Plastic Armchair DAW pairs Charles and Ray Eames’ sculptural armchair shell, first introduced in 1950, with the distinctive timber dowel base. It is one of the most recognisable designs of the 20th century.
This one has a black shell on warm timber legs with contrasting black steel cross-bracing, a strong, architectural look that keeps the shell’s organic curves and relaxed proportions.
An authentic Vitra example with original Vitra/Eames manufacturer markings and labelling.
The Eames shell chair is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Condition
Pre-owned, in good overall condition for its age, with light surface marks and general signs of use. The timber dowel base shows minor wear but is solid and structurally sound. Timber is a natural material, so variations in grain are part of its character, not defects.

About Charles & Ray Eames ▾
Husband-and-wife team Charles (1907–1978) and Ray Eames (1912–1988) are among the most influential designers of the 20th century. From their studio in Venice, Los Angeles, they pioneered new ways of moulding plywood, fibreglass, plastic and aluminium into furniture that was comfortable, durable and affordable to produce. They were also architects and filmmakers, known for their own Eames House (1949) and the short film Powers of Ten.
