The Aluminium Group was designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958 and has been made by Herman Miller ever since. It began as outdoor seating for the J. Irwin Miller house in Columbus, Indiana, at the request of architect Eero Saarinen and designer Alexander Girard.
Instead of a padded shell, the seat is a single sling stretched between two aluminium side ribs, so it gives slightly under your weight. That is how the chair stays so slim.
This is the EA331 with arms, made in 2011, in ribbed black leather with a polished aluminium frame. It swivels on a five-star base with castors, at a fixed height with no tilt.
Condition
Pre-owned. Each chair varies slightly. Overall good used condition, with some minor scratches around the arms. See photos. Leather is a natural material, so variations in grain and colour and a gentle patina from use are part of its character.

Husband-and-wife team Charles (1907–1978) and Ray Eames (1912–1988) are among the most influential designers of the 20th century. From their studio in Venice, Los Angeles, they pioneered new ways of moulding plywood, fibreglass, plastic and aluminium into furniture that was comfortable, durable and affordable to produce. They were also architects and filmmakers, known for their own Eames House (1949) and the short film Powers of Ten.
