The Eames Molded Fiberglass Side Chair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames and introduced in 1950, is one of the most recognisable pieces of mid-century furniture. It was built around a single idea: a comfortable, sculptural chair made from one moulded shell.
Unlike the later polypropylene versions, fibreglass has visible fibres and natural surface variation, so every shell has its own character. Herman Miller later reintroduced fibreglass using an improved process while keeping the original texture and look.
This authentic Herman Miller example has an Ultramarine Blue shell on the iconic White Wire “Eiffel” base. It was made in the USA in 2015, with Herman Miller, Eames Office and Eames signature markings moulded into the underside of the shell. Fibreglass versions are rarely seen second-hand in Australia.
The Eames shell chair is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Condition
Pre-owned, with some minor marks from previous use. The exposed fibres and variation throughout the shell are characteristic of the material. Please see the photos.

Husband-and-wife team Charles (1907–1978) and Ray Eames (1912–1988) are among the most influential designers of the 20th century. From their studio in Venice, Los Angeles, they pioneered new ways of moulding plywood, fibreglass, plastic and aluminium into furniture that was comfortable, durable and affordable to produce. They were also architects and filmmakers, known for their own Eames House (1949) and the short film Powers of Ten.

Founded in 1905 in Zeeland, Michigan, Herman Miller became one of the world's most important furniture makers by partnering with visionary designers.
